Stick and chain device for measuring first down yardage? I'm sure there is a name for it...

Not the chain nor the sticks on either end, because together they are just a binary device, you either reach a first down or not.
However, the line of scrimmage marker is analog, it can be placed anywhere between the sticks along the chain.

Being 'binary' does not make it digital.
A light switch is binary(on/off) but is NOT digital(unless you count the things attached to one's hand that operates them).

Analog
adjective
relating to or using signals or information represented by a continuously variable physical quantity such as spatial position, voltage, etc.
Nothing continuous about an on/off switch or a first down marker.

Since we seem to be in definition mode:
Binary - having two(bi) states.
Bit - a binary representation.
Digital = either 1)relating to fingers 2)as a display device uses graphic representation of numbers 3)values represented by several bits to represent a range of values(used for measuring)
Analog - having a continuous range of values [binary has steps = bit value]
Not sure what any of this has to do with "analof".

I wasn't sure if I should riff on "analof" or do some pointless nitpicking. Seemed like a toss-up.

Nit picking is how one gets down to the least significant bit.
