I got a new spring and housing assembly, but can't seem to connect it to the quill feed pinion. Screw coming out of the quill feel pinion won't connect into slot. Help!

spring and housing assembly

I always wear a pair of leather working gloves when working with the quill feed spring. I find that I have to bend the end of the spring with the slotted hole so the slotted hole is closest to the center of the spring. Then with the spring and housing on the quill feed shaft, I pull with needle nose pliers the slotted end out of the housing about 2/3th of the way and attempt to hook the larger hole over the drive screw. Once hooked I make sure the narrow part of the slotted hole is fully seated on the drive pin. Then slide the housing fully over the spring and install the retaining ring. You should only turn the quill feed handle in a CW direction (viewed from the speed control handle side) with no quill housing installed. You need 2- 2 1/2 turns before installing the quill housing. Turning the quill feed handle in a CCW direction without the quill housing installed will normally unhook the quill feed spring.

If I am only removing the quill housing, I lock the feed stop handle to prevent the quill feed spring from unwinding once the quill housing is removed. Just letting go of the quill feed handle once the quill housing is released is hard on your hand and will normally unhook the quill feed spring.
