new to SS and 10E

hello everyone
I recently scored this 10E for free. it has a contraption for belts. What is this thing called? Is it useful?
I noticed in the restored manual found off this forum that it shows the belt going from the motor to the head pulleys. Is that configuration more useful? what length belt is used for that config? In general, what style/type of belt is best to us

That's a speed changer, it's worth about $150.00 at the least. It's also a somewhat rare item. Don't over tighten it or it will break.

It appears to be already broken. First photo shows a broken pulley and the third appears to show a crack in the tie bar

The tie bar can be welded. It is good that it is only cracked on the bottom. The pulley is another thing. The speed changer is a rare part and individual pieces are even rarer/almost non existent. Sometimes broken ones show up on eBay for well under $150. Since the OP got the machine free it would be worth it to find another broken speed changer and build a complete unit. You rarely see a broken pulley.
Yes, the speed changer is more useful than the direct belt connection. It gives you a broader speed range. It is definitely worth trying to make it serviceable.

Just know that casting is aluminum.

Also adding to it's rarity, it as a 0-8 calibrated scale. Do not use above "5".
And NEVER adjust with either spring on the control crank shaft fully compressed.
P.S. did you also get the "4E" jointer?

Absolutely! It looks like you have an intact hinge plate to go with your classic 4E jointer, which is usually the first victim of carelessness. And thus is very hard to find. Post pics of everything you have, and we will do our best to help.

BTW a planer is a different animal(thickness planer).
