I bought two shopsmith live center extensions for future pen turning. How do I install them on my 510?

Thanks
Brad

Does anyone know how to use them with the live center?

Hi,

I don't have the shopsmith version but I think they look something like this which is a MT2 extension. If they look like this then this picture should work for you. The dead or live center fits into the one side and MT2 part fits in the tail stock.

If someone has pictures of the shopsmith version please post.

The Shopsmith live center has multiple pieces, unscrew the Morse Taper from the part with the bearing. Then thread each of the extensions into the now exposed screw and then put the bearing back on.

Anybody got the part number on the SS extension? I looked at the Accessories web page and didn't see one listed under the Lathe accessories (of course I may be blind)... This sounds like a useful accessory for turning pens.

i have turned several hundred pens on my shopsmith and as of the present day see no need to use an extension for the live center. the standard 8" tool rest will work fine if you extend the quill a couple of inches. the 4" rest is a pain to keep moving(not really a pain, just not neccesary if you use the 8"). i use a hardened 60 degree live center as the wood type live center does not fit the mandrel properly and can cause out of round pen barrels.

Hi bettyt,
Do you have the Lift Assist mounted on your Mark V? Some that do have stated that they must use an extension. :)

The part number for the lathe center spacer in my manual is 514704 (though it doesn't show up on an item number search). So either someone with a newer part number will step up or you can use my part number when you call SS.

Hi all;
A #2 Mores tapre extension is available from Grainger Industrial.
It is Grainger part # 3L918 and is listed on page 3080 of the Grainger catalog.
Price is lsted as $35.00 and does not include shipping. It should provide about 3 inches of movement to the left.
The left end of the extension has a #2 MT male end and the other end is a #2 Morse socket which will accept the SS lathe live center.

Thanks for the SS part number Rob. I'll check with them tomorrow.
