I have no idea what is going on but the cedar 4 x 4 x 8' lumber I looked at today wasn't even good enough for the scrap bin. Huge splits in come cases all the way through the 4 x 4 for more then half the length, twisted, warped, chucks missing, and those were the good ones. I wouldn't ever buy wood this bad for anything but firewood.

So I went to another store and much the same thing. That was all I had time for today so another day I will try a couple of other places. BTW we are talking over $30 each. I looked at the AC2 and it looked bad too.

I need to replace my mail box post and we have ordered another rain barrel that I want to make a short platform for....... I might just leave the mail box post another year but I do need to make the platform, which is starting to looking like treated 2 x 4 which looked pretty good which they really should for over $12.50 each..... OK maybe some cement blocks or ?????

Again many mills in the south east will not take in timber because they have piles of it sitting. Why it isn't being cut into lumber is anyone's guess.

find a local mill that cuts telephone poles . probably cheaper and will out last anything you can get at the BBS .

Hi, I want to say that of course you should look where there is a mill in your area, it will in all senses be better, cheaper, etc.

I thought things were getting better... I've mostly avoided high priced lumber by not doing many construction type projects for a while, but I have a must-do fence repair needing to replace one cedar 4X4 that rotted off below grade. I went to pick one up at HD, an 8 footer was $45.XX and a 10 footer was $46.XX.

Is kiln dried pine usually more expensive than your cedar 4x4? Back in May I bought a 12' 4x4 and it cost me $105.

4x4x8' Cedar available at my local Lowes for $36.98. Prices have been coming down, PT and White Pine have dropped in price considerably. F'rinstance, 4x4x8' PT costs $11.48, same thing in Doug Fir is $15.82, but cheap White Pine is unavailable. There's a leftover demand wave that has to work its way through the more valuable lumber until we see any more price drop, if there is any price drop left after inflation. And local supplies may stay low keeping the price of some items high.

I think you win with that one! Cedar is not (usually) an expensive wood but higher than pine. It is commonly used here for privacy fences, pergolas, rustic interiors, etc. I hate to think what the linear foot price for a 5 or 6 foot cedar backyard fence is right now though.

I went back to confirm the type of wood it was and it was actually Kiln Dried Douglas Fir. Although I'm new to this, and have always just bought cheap stuff at HD in the past, I was a bit shocked at the price. Still, I thought it was worth putting the money into my workbench, which has been invaluable to me already.
Also, I certainly didn't want to win this one.
