I had not given this a lot of thought until I began the recent discussions about the DC-3300 Upgrade and the DC-6000.

How does the debris picked up by the DC-3300 travel? Is the fiber hood expected to gather just fine dust while all of the heavier stuff literally "falls" into the collection bag?

If this is the case, is there any obvious reason why the collection bag could not be a hard sided container? I would sure like to get rid of the hassle that comes with changing collection bags.

The bag blows up like a balloon but it can be gathered up into a handful until debris begins to collect.... (I think an indication that it is not under a great deal of pressure.

We've been told here on the forum that regular Hefty garbage bags can be used for dust collection and this might be why. The bag is under only that strain brought by the collection of dust. not a statement of fact...just thinking on paper

As long as what pressure there is can be relieved by the fiber bag path, the collection bag can be 'gathered'. The heavier debris does literally fall similar to a cyclone separator, but the separator collector is under a vacuum. The DC3300 collection bag is only under whatever back pressure the fiber bag causes because it is resisting flow.

I guess I could find out for sure by putting a hard walled container there to collect the "debris" and turn on the dust collector without the plastic bag.

People have done this with other dust collectors and it should work with this kind. You still need a tight seal with the dust collector because the airflow will carry out dust through any leak. I'm not sure what you find as a problem with the bags though. You can certainly put a hard container inside the bag and see that it will work, but it's the bag that's still providing the seal to the dust collector plenum.

Get a suitable 'container'.

Cut the bottom out of a collection bag.

Attach the bottomless bag as normally done to the DC.

Pull the bottomless bag down over the container.

Seal the bag around the top of the container.

I ran across a video the other day about changing the bag system on a dust collector. It should work on the SS dust collector as well. Hope it helps.

It is definitely a good video and Stubby covers how dust collectors with filter hoods are really dust pumps in the shop, not dust collectors. Definitely give him kudos for covering that. Switching to a HEPA filter is a big improvement, but understand it will clog fast unless a cyclone is used before the DC. However, I don't find the bag conversion that useful. It seems like it will make almost as much mess (and dust cloud) on emptying as the original bag (IMHO).
