If I understand what you are asking. By having the the pulleys opposite keeps the belt in line and provides the different speeds, just like a Drill Press. Example the 2" motor pulley to the 4" headstock pulley. If the pulleys both face the same way than keeping the belt in line gives the same speed just on different size pulleys and requiring different length belts. The 2" to 2", the 3" to 3" and the 4" to 4". The Model 10E and 10ER do work like a drill press, in fact it was designed after the Drill Press with the addition of a second post (the way tubes). Additional parts added to it allows it to be laid down and provide other functions.

That depends on your work , understanding the working load of a motor and the pulleys as described in the link I posted you will find your answer as to how to control the speed and torque ,there is no one setting that does everything , the pulleys orientation depends on the load the speed and the torque desired , it will work in any manner you put them as long as the applied load does not exceed the motor load capacity , switching the speeds and and the torque is one advantage you have with those pullies , on a drill press your bigger bits run at a slower speed and a small bit can be run at a higher speed , same with a lathe and the dia of the stock you are turning , higher speeds produce less torque . small bits do not require as much torque as a big one , just like a lathe slow speed to start and than you can increase the speed as needed or desired , large dia pieces on the lathe will need to be run at a slow speed , keep in mind everything has limits and factors such as heat generated as work is being done , especially when drilling any steel in the drill press mode , and the balance of the stock being turned on the lathe also is a major factor to consider ,once the work piece is running true and some what balanced than you can slowly increase the speed , the link I posted and other links online should help you determine fairly close as to the rpm your pullies will produce . most other needs will be determined by the work being done . your question is like asking at what speed should you drive a car ?

If you are asking about the motor pulley the answer is yes. The pulleys should be attached as shown in the picture BuckeyeDennis posted. That has the pulleys facing opposite directions. Hobbyman2 has given you some charts for drilling speeds. The following is a PDF copy of the original Shopsmith Speed Chart for the different functions of the Model 10E and 10ER.

I dont recall the exact operation was being done at a drill press years ago but it seems to me the operator actually turned the drive pully around and slid the arbor pully out to acquire the speed they needed , as to the proper way the drive pully is installed I would install it as shown and like mentioned unless you need to change to a speed that is not available in that configuration . the one link mentioned feed rate , we called it working load . to this day I cant believe no one has installed one of these on their equipment . https://www.ebay.com/itm/333861377548?_ ... %3A2334524

One thing missing is the pulley guard. I personally would not go without one but I know some do. The pulley guard only works if the pulley is installed correctly, if it is backwards the guard will not go on.

The reason I know that is when I got the one I reconditioned for my brother is was minus the guard so I got one off ebay and when I went to put it on it wouldn't fit. Hadn't even thought about how the pulleys were mounted as the previous owner was using it that way. When I got my hands on the manual it was clearly put together wrong. Not a big issue but one of the things I fixed when I refurbished it.

I acquired a 10ER in May and get the same way about the amount of information available. While this forum primarily focuses on the Mark 5/V the experts fully support the 10 E/ER. You will notice in the Maintenance and Repair section that they have pinned a helpful topic titled “Everything Mark 5/V - Technical Info, Documentation, Links” but you won’t find a similar topic pinned for the 10 E/ER. The person I got my 10ER from, Mickyd, sent me a link to the topic he created, and it is titled “Everything E/ER - Technical Info, Documentation, Links”. While it is not as complete as the document for the Mark 5/V it is incredibly helpful, but I wish it was similarly pinned to the top of the Maintenance and Repair section. I have created my own bookmark and I suggest you create yours so you have easy access to key info for your machine. You can find this topic at:
