It was a pretty hectic week leading up to the "big?" craft sale. Actually the effects of the economic turndown was seen here as there were fewer exhibitors as well as less traffic.

All in all not too bad a day and interesting as usual in what sells and what doesn't. Sold two racing cars that I had offered since 2003 and 2004. Not wanted in other years but both gone this year. As I said to the first buyer, "Thank you, now I can finally make another one". Mr & Mrs Frosty, which were popular the last two years stayed on the floor. Gosh I dislike carrying those big things back to the car!

In an attempt to offer more items, I made two trucks and two multi dimensional tic-tac-toe games during the week. The trucks were based on the same chasis that I have used before but this time I decided to make them into container carriers. Finished them late Staurday night in time for the show Sunday. Had a rather funny incident with one of them at the show. A little tyke came along and admired the trucks, two plain transport trailers, and the two container carriers. Later he came back with money in hand and chose one of the yellow dyed transport trailers. His mother tried to steer him to the container carrier on the basis that it had three parts instead of only two. No dice, he wanted the yellow transport trailer. One satisfied customer, one puzzled mom.

The tic-tac-toe games were intended to be the usual four way games that I have made in the past, but I could not find good 2 x 8 wood to make the bases so I opted for 2 x 6 and made them into three dimensional games. I think the lower price ( 36 fewer balls at 0.15/ea) made them more attractive as they were both sold.

The staff at the local seniors home has been asking my wife if we will do a small show there again this year. It offers a pleasant change in routine to the residents, and a chance for the staff to purchase gifts without having to shop. It looks like I have enough stuff left to do one but I will try to make a couple more things this week to make it more appealing.

Have a Safe and Fun week!

John, I can't blame the lil fella for wanting the yellow truck.
I'm partial to yellow vehicles myself.

I guess Mom's don't always understand everything that makes their little boy a BOY!

The Senior Center's show should be fun! Isn't that the show where you had the photos last year?

Had a slow week in the Shop - a couple of days to apply Varathane to Mrs. Charlese's phone chair - plugged up the roof vent in hope to retain some of the electric heat necessary in the mornings - Found a narrow cutoff of hard maple, 4 ft. long - just right for turning 4 hammer handles. I have been really attracted to the brass hammer post from Ed in Tampa" - Thanks ED!

I ordered a foot of 7/8" brass the day after that post and it arrived today. Tomorrow I should have 4 hammers.

Got a day in this week to finally winterize our R.V.

Chuck:

I think the photos last year were of the high school fund raiser, which is the show I did last weekend. I would have liked to take photos of the container trucks but as mentioned, finished just in time for the show and gone that day. The container is removable from the trailer and I contemplated fancy methods of attaching it so it would stay put when rolling . In the end I opted for a simple solution, small dowels in the bottom that fit into holes in the trailer corners. The alignment of the dowels & holes were not perfect for all corners, so I drew a door on the back so it would be obvious which way it fit on the truck. Someday I must make another of each truck so I can take a picture of "the fleet". It is now up to five: transport trailer (original plan), flatbed trailer (no brainer!), tanker trailer, log carrier, and container carrier.

Anxious to see the hammers. Four in one day? It would take me four (or more)days just to think about it.:D

Have fun.

John

I forgot to mention that I was reminded how much I enjoy making these toys that even I could play with. As with many of us, that was how I started in woodworking.

It seems that my over-ambitious plans have been thwarted! Too cold (17 F.) this AM to get into the shop early, Then Shopping with Mama until 2 PM. At least we had a good Mexican meal out! Anyway got into the shop for a couple of hours and was successful in shaping two hammer heads.

The handles were made last week. - and yes, I've spend more than 4 days waiting for the brass rod to come and thinking about the project. The methods were pretty well spelled out in the link from Ed's (in Tampa) post. http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/wood ... ammer.html

More on the unique brass cutting/shaping methods next week.
