I called Shopsmith today looking for a "tiebar shield" for my father's S.S. Mk V 500.
This piece is discontinued and no longer available, I was told.
I hope that it is ok to ask if anyone has a nice one available, as Shopsmith can no longer provide one for me.

I never did have one for mine. What is it for?

gnuse,
The currently listed Model 500 lower saw guard upgrade kit #555294
has the latest version of the Model 500 tie bar shield along with the parts needed to convert the lower saw guard to the latest version.
This upgrade kit will give you dual 2 1/4" dust collector ports and replaces the front piece of the plastic lower saw guard if that is what you have. This kit won't work with the older metal saw guard.
Item # 515288 I think is the latest version of the tie bar shield itself for the 500. There are many different versions of the upper and lower saw guards for the Model 500 but if you only need a tie bar shield, I would think that this could be used. If there are not already mounting holes drilled and tapped into the tie bar, this would have to be done.
I have the latest versions of both upper and lower saw guards and tie bar shields on my two goldie Mk V's and they really work well for dust collection, especially with two hoses in place.
Sometimes you will see tie bar shields on ebay also. I am sure others will have more info to help you. Good luck, John McCrossen

Thanks John.
As I stated, I called Shopsmith and the part I wanted is discontinued and no longer available. They did say I could update to a newer version, but that is a long and winding trail that I have opted out of.
I am sure a nice, original style for a 500 is out there. Just needs to be found.

do you need the part that covers over the cast iron part on the lower saw guard?

I think so. I have only seen it on the exploded view on the S.S. service parts catalog.

gnuse,
I think I have what you are looking for in my shop somewhere. I'll take a look tomorrow and let you know. If I have it you can have it for the cost of shipping. I'm not 100% sure but I think I saw it a couple of months ago when looking through old stuff to find something else.

gnuse,
After checking in my shop I discovered I can not locate the tie bar shield. That's not to say I don't have one but I sure couldn't find it today. I may have sent it as part of a couple of saw guard kits I sold.
Sorry I wasn't able to help.

I'm not sure what this "tie bar shield" does, so maybe I don't need it. Anyone have thoughts on this piece?

Although I'm not exactly sure of what this part is, my brother-in-law has just upgraded his 1982 model 500 to the new upper and lower guards. I'm sure he has the old parts. Let me know if you can't find what you need.
