I tried removing the washer from mine today to use it on my cast iron bandsaw. I couldn't find an Allen wrench to fit although I have almost every size imaginable. On close assisted viewing I discovered the po had aggressively rounded out that tiny octagon. So I let it soak in WD40 for abut a hour, got a small torx screwdriver and forced it down into the hold. Using an adjustable spanner I slowly i\unscrewed it. Perhaps this may help someone down the line.

Great idea! Did the Torx survive the operation?

There aren't many things more frustrating than problems caused by a previous owner who didn't know what he was doing and messing up simple things.

I find that original machines that have had lots of use and little or no maintenance are almost always in better shape than one owned by someone who didn't use the machine, but "worked" on it and "restored" it. Usually those two terms mean he just screwed it up.

Are you going to replace it?

The torx did quite well. I bought this several years ago for something and have used only a few times. But it was there when I needed it.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to try and remember it. I have removed many "buggered up" Allen screws restoring Shopsmiths.
