That looks very nice. One of these days I hope to clean mine up like that, but for now I'm just happy it is fully functional.

DarrenDD,
The Housing Cover on that Model A-34 Jig Saw is exactly what I was referring to. The one I restored is that same early version and I have an extra cover I was thinking of doing that paint job on.

Painting the raised portions is not fun unless you like tedious work. Much easier to paint it all one color and hit the raised portions with 1200 grit finish sander.

Probably why Magna didn't paint it.

Re: Jointer Cleanup and Repair
Success!!! I was finally able to use both my jointer and planer and they work great. Last week I sharpened the knives for both using the ShopSmith sharpening jig/conical sanding disk, and then an Arkansas oil stone. I installed and aligned the knives using Nick’s video on planer knife alignment and Scott’s jointer knife alignment video. I also removed the paint from the Magna logo on the cutter head guard using 1000, 1500, and 2000 wet/dry sandpaper. I then used the two tools to mill some poplar boards that will be used in my next project.
This was also my first significant use of the dust collector. After milling the two boards you see in the photos below I ended up with only a small dustpan full of wood chips and dust on the floor. I’m so grateful that everything works so well.
Thank you all for your guidance on refurbishing and maintaining all the ShopSmith equipment. I am now at a point where I can make things from rough wood in my small garage workshop. I still cannot yet park my car in there; still a lot of wall racks and cabinets to build. My next project is a 30” tall cat scratching post with replaceable sisal natural fiber rug on the scratching surface.
.
I’m sorry, but I forgot to turn my iPhone sideways to shoot the following photos, but I cannot go back and retake them now.

MickyD would be proud.
I think he selected the right one to inherit.
Does your planer have the chip collector upgrade?

Re: Jointer Cleanup and Repair
So, the older jointer doesn't have dust collection, right? Just wondering why there was so much dust & wood chips on the floor afterwords, but that makes sense if it has no dust collection.

Re: Jointer Cleanup and Repair
Thank you. I texted MickyD those photos a couple days ago so he could see how I’m taking care of his baby.
No, it did not have dust collection chute. But I bought one on EBay for a reasonable price. The jointer had no threaded hole so for the screws that came with the chute to screw into. But the Jointer does have the two holes where I could put a screw, with a washer, lock washer, and nut. Very little wood chips came from the jointer operation, most of that little pile in my photos came from the planer. So, I think it works well.
I am a little worried about the screw coming loose some time over the coming years, so I am thinking of threading the hole, and either use a larger screw or insert a heli-coil so I can use a smaller screw.

Re: Jointer Cleanup and Repair
You shouldn't have a pile of wood chips that big from planer operation with a dust collector, unless you planed a whole tree with it. JMO. Do you have the plastic dust chute that goes inside the planer? Does your DC-3300 have good suction at the end of the house when you check it with your hand? Also, I see that the bottom port is left open on your DC-3300, i.e. not plugged off which may have impacted your dust collection performance.

Re: Jointer Cleanup and Repair
Marc,
I agree with JPG in that MickyD would be proud.
Looking in hind site it is curious that Magna added the holes that eventually became the point of attachment for the Jointer Dust Chute so long before it was made. I think you have a good idea in threading the holes and either using larger screws or adding heli-coils to use the OEM screws. Having the dust collection on the Jointer will make it much more pleasurable to use reducing cleanup. Since it cannot be added to the Model 4E Jointer mine is mostly a collectors piece and I use my upgraded 1979 Jointer. The only time I would use my Model 4E jointer over the 1979 Jointer is for rabbiting as it is easier to set up having the easily removed cutter guard.
