I think I know what it is, but have never seen one. I think you should include a pic, many have never seen it and might not know what it is. Is it the plastic thingy that mounts to the headstock belt cover and 'protects' the operator from hubs or empty spindles? Introduced some time AFTER 50 years of production...

Yes, I also use it. I installed mine more "permanently" with bolts and lock nuts. Drilled a hole in the top of the upper shaft guard for access with allen wrench in case I need to loosen, tighten, or remove hub. A PVC cap also slip fits over the end of the upper guard for extra protection from accidental contact.

They already did. It is a bit bulky though. It's called the Lower Blade Guard and the Table

There are even hub guards now found on some SPT's just to keep us safe. One of my Jointers has the Dust Chute Upgrade Kit installed which has a hub guard. My 2006 Bandsaw includes a hub guard too. At some point there may even be a guard made to cover the coupler between the headstock and SPT's. Between law suits and the Consumer Products Safety Commission, safety for tools is a big deal.

I have one on my Mark V made in 2006. They came stock by then. I have one for my Power Pro Headstock but haven't installed it yet. It doesn't have pre-tapped holes for it like the 2006 Belt Cover so I have to add them. I use the Power Pro Mark 7 mostly and find it helpful to have the upper hub exposed to turn the quill by hand at times. I'll have to get a Quill Twister shown at the link below if I do add it.

Note: If your early (before 1952) version Shopsmith coupler looks like the one shown in the picture at the right, you will need to order a new coupler to use the Quill Twister.

That coupler didn't come out until 1954 after the Mark 5 was introduced and wasn't even the original coupler design. There were no SPT Couplers available or needed in 1952. They may have meant 1962 which is about the time the coupler changed to look like the ones made today. Oops

521889 Belt Cover Shaft Guard ... $4.95 is only the shaft guard (one item). It is plastic BTW.

522397 Belt Cover & Shaft Guard ... $88.07 Notice the & in the description. To me that means the metal belt cover for the SS head stock and the shaft guard that attaches to it (two items).
