I made use of the empty space of my table saw build the router table. It's a great idea. It is a good idea to at least purchase an insert for your router table. I am sick of seeing people make a hole, then connect the sub base onto a piece of MDF or plywood. I own an Jessum router plate. it cost me about $70, which isn't outrageously expensive. I did not go for an elevator since my router has an over-the-table adjustment built into.

They are essential. Similar to table saws you need to have as little space as you can between your table and your router. This will help prevent tears from forming and will also stop huge chunks of chips falling down the router's motor.
