Huge flocks this time of year. They don't often land in the yard. The picture doesn't do justice as to the size but if I had opened the door there would be no picture. :)

That's wonderful, you're in the Pacific Flyway. When I was a kid I frequently stayed with my grandma in southern Illinois. She hated starlings, they were always making a racket and harassing her other birds. She would shoo them away, and I always got a kick out of her. Love the photo. From that shot I can imagine the numbers because I've seen something similar in the fields near my dad's place in southeast Missouri. One year when I was visiting him they had thousands of snow geese hanging out like your starlings. Very cool.

It looks like something out of a certain Alfred Hitchcock movie!

Yeh, that was my first thought for the subject of the thread but I changed it for no particular reason.

When I was a kid in S. IL, our little town would hold a Labor Day celebration each year. Huge Elms and Oaks lined the streets. The Starlings took roost by the hundreds and they'd poop all over the cars and, pedestrians couldn't avoid stepping in it or, being hit.
The men of the town would bring their 12 gauges and fire into the trees. Might hit a couple but the rest flew, only to return within minutes. A futile waste of ammo but, they had fun!

What town in S. IL? My grandmother and great aunt lived in Rosiclare and Elizabethtown, right on the Ohio River, and I have a bunch of relatives in Reevesville.

Ah, north of where my dad’s family is from, but close to where my mom grew up, which is Danville. I spent my first 19 years in Eureka, MO; before I joined the Navy.
