Hello everyone.
Wondering if I can get some help on an issue...

I JUST picked up my shopsmith, got it home, and was looking over all the parts and just getting to know it.

Powered the unit up and increased the speed..when it just shut off. No flash. No bang. No crash. Just stopped.

Figured I blew a fuse. Checked the fuse box and nope. Switched outlets. Nothing.

So I got online and started looking around. Figured it must be the power switch. Got online and ordered a new one.

From a few video's and forum posts I figured I knew enough to go out and pull the old one to get ready when the new one arrived.

Looking inside I see this:



On that white wire it LOOKS like the insulation has been ripped off. It's rough when I run my finger across it.

I remember when I purchased it the old owner said something about "the only thing I have ever had to do to it is replace the power switch". Wondering if he left those wires too close to the sheave?

Could that have caused my issues? Is the motor fried in this thing?

Well it's not the white wire. I pulled them and found this:



I figure I will replace this and see if it works. It looks like it just broke. I hope so. I'm pretty upset about not being able to use it right now after spending weeks tracking one down and now thinking about the motor being fried from this is heartbreaking.

Yes insufficient clearance of wires/sheave.

Well now I feel pretty foolish.

So all I did was eliminate the extensions and plugged the wires directly into the switch and it ran.

Sorry about jumping on here and posting before completely trouble shooting and seeing if I could figure it out myself!

No sweat!

It may help someone else 'tomorrow'.

Did you oil the control sheave while in thar?

It looks like all the jumper wires did were to get in the way and cause problems. I don't understand why someone added them in the first place. As JPG noted your posting this may help someone else later. It is important that the wires are routed inside the headstock, so they don't interfere or contact moving parts. Also, as JPG noted anytime you have to get inside the Headstock for another reason it is a good time to do some lubrication.
