Chicagoland normally gets its first measurable snow a lot earlier then this. In fact the record latest was Dec 20, so the new record is Dec 28. This amounts to about 39 days later then normal. Two more storms coming this week so it starting to feel a lot like winter. That is OK since I can now start officially waiting for spring and warm weather.

This is a 10 second video of the flakes falling shot out our front door. This is for those of you who never see snow or those that miss the sight of it.
Have a few shop projects I'd like to finish before the great winter shut down. Can't afford to heat the shop and too old to feel comfortable working out in the cold. As it is I have lined up more inside projects that I need to deal with anyway. Still have trim to do in the downstairs bathroom and some caulking in the upstairs before I can call them done. But those are quick trips to the shop and then back into the warmth.

We got very little snow before Christmas, probably only abouth 3 inches total. But Christmas gave us a gift. In the past few days since Christmas, we have had around 15 inches of new snow, and tonight the forecast is for -20 degrees and more nights like it to follow later this week. It is feeling just like a normal December, and my calendar says it is December so that matches up well.
In another 3 months, the temperatures should warm up and the snow should melt (if things are normal). We will see.

On the other hand...the west is getting lots of early snow. We have about 2 feet on the ground right now at the house and I would guess our season total so far is nearly 4 feet. Our house is at 2700 feet elevation; the local ski hill has logged over 10 feet so far for the year at 6200 feet. I have 5 hours on the snowthrower this winter already, and a typical winter is about 8 hours. Over halfway there, but only about a quarter of the way through the winter
Fortunately, a woodstove keeps the shop comfortable, so I can make sawdust whenever I am not snowthrowing!

It is -26 F here this morning, but we were blessed with about 15inches of snow over Christmas, so there is a nice blanket of insulation out there to protect things. We should be OK. It would be much worse if we had not got the snow.

We got a light dusting on Christmas day, our first snow of the year. Then about 3 inches on Boxing day, and another 3 on Monday, sadly another 3 to 5 are expected Wednesday.
We are having an Arctic outflow, so the temperature has been below freezing, and not expected to warm again till Sunday.

A thin coating on the grass one morning, which quickly disappeared here in NJ - otherwise, we've had nothing but an occasional flake drifting around for a few minutes. We were in NH for Christmas, and they got an inch or two. But then it turned into freezing drizzle and turned everything into a skating rink.

We have gotten a little bit each day since Christmas night. Somewhere between an inch or two total. Today is supposed to be dry. Anytime you want to stop sending the Artic cold our way Ron is fine with me. Some years we do not get any snow locally. Gary, I hope it warms up and the snow goes away by June since I will be there for a wedding.

It usually warms up by late March here, and the snow usualy melts by sometime in April. June should be safe unless you dislike heat. It might be 100 degrees in June.
