Home Depot is changing their standard policy and extending their everyday military discount to include veterans. Discount will be available both in-store and for online shopping. Their is a verification process that varies according to when you served, I had to send a copy of my DD-214 but I think younger vets must be in a database. When using the discount in-store I'm told you show some form of ID from your smart phone.

I don't have a smartphone so I don't have any ID on one, but I don't have a Home Depot either so none of it matters. I'll just have to keep shopping at Menards instead. Then I don't need a smartphone.

Home Depot instituted that policy some time ago.

A number of years ago Congress instructed the VA to issue Veteran ID cards to all vets. They started doing that in 2017. You can go to the VA web site to find out how to apply. There is a thread here from 2017 on that subject. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=20773&hilit=veteran

As far as having to show your ID at the store, it has not been that way for a long time. When they first offered the discount you had to show your ID every time and the cashier would enter the discount. A few years ago they changed that. Now you show your ID the first time and they enter you in the Home Depot Pro data base. Then when you check out you enter your phone number and the discount is automatically applied. That is the way it works here so unless they are going to change it again it should be the same for all stores.

I don't shop there much due to the self-service check outs that I hate but when forced to this will help.

A cautionary tale is in order. The application process online has the "ID.me" commercial account. This is NOT the vet admin, it is a private company that will sell your information to various other enterprises, notwithstanding their statements to the contrary. I know because they send me promotional material offering lists of eligible names, address, and shopping preferences. There are other ways to identify as a vet, would advise using one of those and not the "ID.me" commercial site.

From HD's website: "The Home Depot partners with SheerID, our trusted third-party verification service, which uses private and secure data sources to confirm the accuracy of the information you provide." I agree that there are other ways to identify as a vet. In Texas, veteran status can be on your Driver's License if you wish based on their review of DD-214. Most retailers, including HD in the past, then accept the DL. Lowe's, IIRC, uses DD-214 and then tags your account. Once you are in a system, many stores just require a phone number. IIUC HD is changing their program and require registration on line, using their chosen process. This is what I was told by more than one HD cashier in November/December. SheerID says you can redact anything you wish on whatever documentation you provide as long as it contains your name, branch, and date of discharge. I've chose not to provide SheerID with info in the past for another online retailer, this time I chose to provide it.
