Trivet

My mom visited during the Thanksgiving break-nice to see someone after 2 years! Especially her. Had a great get together.
She had brought along a bag full of corks that she claimed were the result of time alone due to Covid - haha - she didnt need to bring any- i already had a bag of my own ! - but she asked me to think of something to do with them for her.
Anyways-the one thing i found cork seems to be used for is trivets (sp?) ...hot plates for pans.
So-i proceeded to build up a simple trivet for her.
As usual with woodworking - i needed something i didnt have - a kind of fixture to get a flat side on a cork for later gluing/mounting
to the trivet base. Maybe the most interesting part of the project.
Here is the fixture- with an inserted stick-it pushes the cork flat against the hole created by a forstner bit-that was then slit open on one side with the bandsaw. The protruded cork could then be sliced off easily by guiding along the bandsaw fence.
Running this against the bandsaw fence allowed for flat slices to be removed from the corks without the cork spinning during the cut.
Here's the curly maple base I started with to receive the corks.
The top .. and bottom..now with my logo
Happy New year everyone !
