M5990 planer replacement belt

I have a m5990 planer on a stand, pulleys look to be 3” and 3 1/2”. Motor is 1 1/2 hp. I don’t have a belt and am looking for a replacement. Would love any advice on a suitable replacement belt, specifically size and if I need a ss specific one or if I can purchase one locally?

Shopsmith lists a belt as a 38" belt. Look at the width of the pulleys and get a 38" belt to fit the pulleys. Any farm store or auto parts store should have one that will work.

The OP does not have a Pro Planer. The M5990 is a Mark mount planer. SS sold power stands for all the SPTs at one time. The power stand for the Mark mount planer had a 1 1/2HP motor. The Pro Planer has a 1 3/4HP motor. A SS mount planer on a power stand is not a Pro Planer.

The 38" belt may be correct but I suggest using a belt length calculator to be sure. The original owner may have used different pulleys than what came with the power stand. You need the two pulley diameters and the spacing between them.

Plug the numbers into the calculator linked above and see what you get. A standard V belt of the correct length is fine.

Thanks for the advice @jsburger, I was able to find the right size with the calculator, turned out it was a 36” belt and I ended up learning a bunch about sizing pulley’s and v belts in the process. Excited to fire this thing up tomorrow and attempt to make some sawdust, or learn that I need to do some calibration or knife sharpening, either way it’ll be a fun day. Cheers!

FWIW the SS mount planer is the same as the Pro Planer. The difference is the Pro Planer has a cast iron bed and the SS mount planer has an aluminum bed with a stainless steel skin on top.

They are absolutely wonderful planers and will last a lifetime +.

Here is an other pulley calculator. I like this one as it allows you to determine what size pulleys you need based on motor speed and required tool speed as well as belt size. Or to determine what speed is being used for a given motor speed based on the pulleys used. This is really useful if you want to use a stand and motor with one of your SPT's and do not have a SS Power Stand for it.
