Lap joints

I made a lap joint jig and am trying it out and am using 2x4's. I found out that the blade will only cut 31/4" deep. Is there a way to make a lap joint with the shopsmith with 2x4's? Thanks

Maximum depth of cut for the Shopsmith is approximately 3-1/2", so I am guessing your jig is taking up the other 1/4". That is a greater depth of cut than stand alone 10" table saws. You might just get away with it using something like the Shopsmith Tenon Master Jig, depending on how long the pieces of wood are.

The normal way to do it is to use a dado blade and cut them like a wide rabbet, with the wide face of the wood flat on the table, or better yet, a cross cut sled. Depth of cut would then be only 3/4".

Thanks for your reply. I was hoping there was a work around, but alas, not to be.

If you're only a 1/4" shy, you could make the rabbet 3 1/4" and make a few cross cuts to nibble away the other 1/4".

Oh but there is. A router as suggested, the band saw as another and multiple face cuts with the table saw.
