Cut-Off Wheel, or Grinding Wheel?

I did feature this in another thread, but wanted to include it here too. There have been a couple of the early, red-sleeved [part number] 175-1 cut-off wheels shared in this thread, but this appears to be some “new” packaging after Magna switched to the “12-xxx” part number scheme. Strangely, this item’s 12-284 part number is a bit of a mystery - is doesn’t appear in any of the known customer or vendor accessory price lists…

Also, is it a cut-off wheel or grinding wheel?? I suppose it depends on whether you believe the inside or the outside of the packaging!

Hi John,
I use Dupli-color ceramic engine paint. That color is called Cast Coat Iron (DE1651) and is sold at automotive stores in a spray can. I learned many years ago rebuilding engines, that this is some of the most durable paint out there. I’ve used it on quite a few different items.

I agree with JPG. Nice lower Saw Blade Guard. Much better than the OEM Lower Saw Blade Guard (shown below) which doesn't allow for Dust Collection.

Mounting Base - Goldie Version

Here's an example of a Mounting Base (part number 91 000) that of course is used to hold an SPT when not mounted on your Shopsmith. This was lightly used, but still has really nice copper coloring from the Goldie color scheme.

I find the Montgomery Ward price tag on the box to be noteworthy, as it indicates Magna American was still supplying Mark 5s to that retailer in that early 1960s timeframe (I don't have any MW Powr-Kraft catalogs from that time to see just how long they continued to stock the Shopsmith products), although I'm not sure if the 50% discount is indicative of a clearance sale at the end of their mutual business run!

I also couldn't find reference to this part in any of my Magna American accessories price lists, so I can't confirm the MW price tag as having the typical list price.

Based on the shape of the Shopsmith logo on the top of the box, this is before the release of the Mark VII, which altered the traditional Shopsmith brand logo.

I'm guessing the person you bought it from wasn't selling it for $2.50.

…unless you add a 3D-printed vacuum hose adapter!

I wish… Let’s say it’s appreciated a bit since the presumed Montgomery Ward clearance sale!

I’ll have to do some inventory sometime to see which super-rare item for which I’ve overpaid has effectively appreciated the most.

John,

Rather than using a 3D-printed vacuum hose adapter like you show above I use the Mark V Saw Blade Guard set shown below for actual operations. It gives a dust collection port and is more versatile than the Model 10 Lower Blade Guard. With the spacer Shopsmith made available it can handle Dado Blades and Molder Heads too.

Yes, the blade is on backwards but that way you can read the name. :D
