John,

I have no idea when the bottle caps were available. Of course, they likely pre-date the screw top and plastic bottles. Probably little give aways at in-store demos and at fairs where they demonstrated them in the past.

It is nice for you that your copy of the Confidential Dealers Book has all those extra manuals in it. Generally, the old pages and manuals would be replaced in the Dealers Book as new replacements came out. Being your Dealers Book came from Magna Engineering Corporation it is an earlier one than mine are. My older one's cover is from Magna Power Tool Corporation and the later one is from Shopsmith Inc. It would be nice to compare the manuals you have with the lists of known manuals to see if you have any additional manuals to add to the lists.

I have several of the Speed Selectors including at least one in the original envelope it was sent in and I think I have one of the warranty return cards too. Although I now have them organized in groups I could take days going through everything I have.

This one is a new-in-box item (although a few bugs appear to have munched on the instruction sheet over the decades). Not the sexiest accessory, but interesting to see how these were provided to buyers back in the day. I’d never seen this particular instruction set, which has a plan for those who wanted to build their own double-SPT and motor setup.

So, DeCristoforo was not the only author in the Magna galaxy of writers back in the day. This volume is from Mario Dal Fabbro, a noted furniture designer of the period, and is billed as a “companion” to PTWFE, and was advertised in a “Helpful Hints from Shopsmith” newsletter published by Yuba, after the ShopMag publication had run out of steam.

Here’s what I believe is a lighted fixture used by a Shopsmith retailer, from sometime in the 1950s. 16” across, and in great condition! The manufacturer’s information on the back suggests the 1950s vintage, and also that it was likely contracted from someone in the Ohio offices of Magna (manufacturer was based in Lima,OH).

The original fluorescent fixture inside the light was in pretty rough shape, so I replaced that with a much lighter and lower power LED fixture, and I use it for inspiration in my home office every day!

Anyone else ever seen one of these around??
