I have the "Special" Miter also.

When looking at ads of the "Greenie" Mark 5 Miters for sale check the bar. If it doesn't look quite right, it may be the "Special" Miter for the Model 10's. As we know not all sellers of parts or even whole machines are the best at listing what they have correctly. This "Special" Miter looks like a Mark 5 "Greenie" one until you look at the bar's difference. Now that being said be careful not to mistake the Model 10 "Special" Miter with the one for the Mark 2 "Greenie" which looks similar. The Mark 2 Miter has a shorter bar than the "Special" or Mark 5 Miter. There is not a hole on the end of the bar for the Universal Hold Down Kit nor is there the slot and set screw for locking it in place. The Model 10 has a different size Miter bar (width and height) than the Mark tools have. In the picture below is a Model 10 "Special" Miter with the Safety Grip on the left and a Mark 2 Miter on the right.

Sorry I was going to include a Mark 5 "Greenie" Miter for comparison but the three I have are currently disassembled for restoration.

Another difference for the Mark 2 Miter is there are no stops for the angles like there is on the Mark 5 and Model 10 "Special" Miters. Those stops can be seen in John's picture of the bottom of the Miter's Protractor.

I have to mention the often inclusion of a wing bolt with M10 miter gauges. I have assumed this is to secure the stop rod.

Any alternative explanation?

You are correct! It is to secure the stop rod. In fact, the mid-50’s stop rods were packaged with wing bolts to fit both the Mark 5 and 10ER miters.

I don't know of any alternative use for the wing bolt.

PROTECTIVE CANVAS COVER
PART NO. 183-1

I’ve seen a number of postings where fellow collectors here have been fortunate to have an original old canvas cover be included with their Model 10 purchase. And of course those generally are in pretty rough shape after faithfully discharging their duties in the shop for so many decades... Greasy, torn, and faded are the typical words that describe these.

I’d never stumbled on one of these covers in any sort of condition until last weekend, and it was worth the wait!! A gentleman was looking for advice on the main Shopsmith group for best options to sell his father-in-law’s 10-ER - and while the machine itself was in rough shape, there was the cover… sitting on top…in its original box… wow!

Until that gentleman pulled it out of the box to take a picture for me to show condition, it likely had never even been out. The material is stiff like brand-new canvas, the folds are crisp, and the logo is brilliant. Very thrilled to have this in the collection.

And I’ll tell you this: the price has certainly appreciated a bit from the original $3.75 retail!

Thanks! It certainly is rare to still be new in box. Others saw the post before I did, but no one commented on this item. I guess they just thought it was a more common box of lathe tools - I did too initially, until I zoomed in…

Nice addition to your collection John. I have one that came in the box that looked like it had never been used until I started using it to cover my first Model 10 restoration. It can be seen in the picture below taken almost 8 years ago. Interesting that the one I have does not have the SS Logo.

I no longer have the Model 10ER or 10E to the left of it. That was many restorations ago.

Russ - do you still have the box your cover came in?? I’d be curious to see if the markings on it are the same.
