Double Tilt Upgrade from Lowes

Post by larryhrockisland »

Lowe's has the double tilt upgrade for $414 and free shipping. First purchase with a new Lowe's card saved another 20%. Out the door for $363. I should be able to pick it up on the 14th. I'm a happy camper. I'll have to see what it takes to upgrade the lift assist or figure out my own quick disconnect. I think I can just change to the heavier gas strut #556199. Thoughts? Does this make for a Mark 7 now? I think the only thing I wouldn't have is the shaper/router shield.

Congratulations. I haven't done this one or seen the PowerPro lift assist, but my understanding is that the 556199 cylinder upgrade includes both more lifting force and the quick disconnect. That is a nice deal from Lowe's, I think this used to be 10% first purchase and 5% thereafter. I got my major upgrades through Lowe's back in the live demo days, the dates they provided were just estimates. I got a few things in less than a week, others in over a month.

When you do the DT upgrade, the way tubes don't fully seat in the Base Arms. This is normal, per the instructions. There was a good suggestion in another thread (from jpg IIRC) to make plugs or inserts to fill that gap.

Larry,

Congratulations on getting the Double Tilt upgrade. As for the Lift Assist it should work on your new Double Tilt the same as the standard Mark V bench. The cylinder change is for going from a conventional Headstock to a Power Pro (or the reverse). This is because of the increased weight of the Power Pro Headstock. I have the Lift Assist on my Mark 7 (upgraded from a Mark V 520) and other than setting it out from the base/arm assembly further than you may need to on the standard Mark V bench it works the same. The extra gap at the base/arm is to allow clearance for the lock knob. As for releasing the cylinder it needs to be in Drill Press mode to do which extends the cylinder's piston. Trying to release the cylinder while in the down position will cause the piston to rapidly extend from the cylinder if you could manage to release it in that position.

I ordered my double tilt through Lowes the same way. Super cheap. I will warn you that it came very late. Shopsmith kept pushing the delivery date back and when the Lowe’s customer service rep called them for updates they wouldn’t get a direct answer. But it did come and it was cheap. So I’m happy

I’m happy to report I picked up my upgrade from Lowes today, only two days longer than expected 😁. Everything packed well, no missing pieces. It will be at least two weeks before I can start the changeover.

Re: Double Tilt Upgrade from Lowes Finally DONE

Post by larryhrockisland »

Bought it in March last year, finally found my round-to-it and started installation yesterday and got done today. I didn’t want to dismount my storage cabinet so I set it on blocks so the legs would be clear and changed one end at a time. Happy with how it turned out. I had to do some modifications where the lift assist mounts.

I have the double tilt and lift assist on mine.

For whatever reason I have a lot of difficulty with the quick disconnect on the lift assist ... unhooking it, and hooking it back on.
So I dont think I ever use the left side of the double tilt arrangement anymore.

I picked up a used machine that had been upgraded with Lift Assist, PP, and DT (etc.). The Lift Assist must have been done first, it is not the version for DT or PP, and doesn't have the quick disconnect. It has the PITA disconnect. Perhaps yours is the same? An upgrade is available from SS, but I just took mine off. Perhaps someone can post a close-up picture of the quick disconnect and you can see if that's the issue. I think there have been several variants of mounting hardware but as far as I know the upgrade piston is compatible with all.

Oh Ok - well - I wont ask anyone to crawl under their dusty machines to take a pic :)

Here is a pic of the one I have. Youre supposed to draw that gnurled knob to the right in the pic which allows for easy disengagement.

That's different than mine and therefore, I'd guess, correct for PP machines.(?)
