SHOP NOTES: We've put this off long enough. Today we tackle my rusty Shopsmith 4" jointer and bring it back to life. Using the Ol' tried-and-true WD-40 and Scotch-Brite® method I'll get this down to bare metal and in our mid-week follow-up episode of "STUMPED? Q&A" we'll answer your questions, comments, and cheap-shots, including my crazy polyurethane cast iron treatment.

🎬 Also, for an excellent video on attacking and preventing rust, take a look at this recent video from Nick Engler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVeY9... And sub him while you at it! He knows more about woodworking and even Shopsmith woodworking than most people I know.

STUMPED? Q&A from "Restoring a Rusty Shopsmith Jointer" SEE WARNINGS BELOW! Rainy Days & Mondays...

SHOP NOTES:
So much for Plan A! Not only are we suffering from a rain delay, but after filming some high-quality "Plan B" footage, I lost it! So, in this video, I answer your Questions, Comments, and Cheap-Shots from the weekend's video on "Restoring a Rusty Shopsmith Jointer".

WARNING: The "Rust Free" product is basically Phosphoric acid, so it is very caustic and should be used in a well ventilated area. I wasn't wearing glasses when I opened it and I ALMOST sniffed it from the bottle! After spraying it on the fumes were strong and it immediately started bubbling on the surface of the jointer. I took the hint and opened the garage door and grabbed some gloves. After reviewing the MSDS I discovered the following precautionary statements:
- Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area
- Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapors/spray
- Wash face, hands and any exposed skin thoroughly after handling
- Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection
- Keep away from heat/sparks/open
So the bottom line is, use this stuff with caution. It really cut through the rust stains, but it was far more caustic than I expected.
