I'm new to the forum and also Shopsmith. A friend gave me this machine and I've just been cleaning it up. The machine was running fine but I felt it wasn't running as smoothly as it should. I unplugged the machine, then used WD40 to lubricate the two sheves. Once lubed, I turned the machine back on and it ran very slowly, almost like it was in a bind. After a few seconds it tripped my GFCI breaker and then stopped completely. Once I restored power to the GFCI I switched the machine back on and nothing happened (no noise and no attempt to start). Most folks say to check the switch, which I will do, but I am wondering if there is a reset button on the motor itself? Any suggestions?

First off, welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

As JPG said there is not a reset on the motor. WD40 is not the best choice for lubricating the sheaves on the motor and idler shafts. You did not say which Shopsmith machine you have but by what you said so far I guess it is a Mark 5/V series. Switches do go bad so checking that may be a good start. I would consider removing the V belt between the Motor and Idler Assembly to check the motor without any load. Without a belt the motor should turn easily and smoothly. If not, it may need new bearings. There may be a problem with poor contact in the motor startup contacts. Dust and dirt can get in there. There may be other motor problems. Hopefully you have a manual for it which can help guide you through maintenance and needed lubrication. If not check out the PDF summary manual at the link below. Thanks for the responses. I determined that the switch was bad, replaced it, and now its back up and running quite well. Thanks for the help!
