What is the Anchor Tool in your shop?

Post by dusty »

For most of us, the anchor tool is our table saw. While that may not be true for all of us, it is a basic premise of this pollster.

Some of us have more than one of the listed possibles. That is OK. In this case, it is OK to have more than one. Personally, I'd have one of each if space and money allowed. Unfortunately, that is not the case so I only have two.

My jointer, with it's compact mass, would be a good anchor, but I'll keep it in my shop.

You are assuming here that the anchor tool is a Shopsmith?

That was not a conscience assumption but that is certainly what has resulted.

I can only hope that those who have something different will say so.

You, for example, I believe have a cabinet saw and this poll unfortunately provides you no way to vote. The poll results will be an inaccurate representation of the real world. My fault.

because I had to vote for a SS tool, mine is my Mark V model 500 (circa 1984).

My real anchor is my table saw of course, but the SS is certainly a close second. It really is a great machine.

My anchor tool would be the Hawk scroll saw, as it is my favorite, and most of my work is scroll or intrasia. Of course I must also list my XM radio, as it is always on when the lights go on in the garage/shop. Even though I can't hear the radio with the vac and saw going, I know it is there for me. MY 510 is the platform for all my larger, and finish work. It usually sits in the saw configuration, but quickly is changed to drill press for sanding, or lowered to lath for sanding with the inflatable sleeve.
As you can see my answers address the original question, but do not give anything close to a clear response.
Now my father would say that every tool in the shop can be a hammer!!!
So perhaps a hammer is my anchor tool.

Yea, I can't answer the poll either, since it's actually a "which shopsmith do you have" question.

I'd say my workbench is my anchor tool in the shop, with the vice coming in a tight second. And that's only if I exclude handtools. Of which, for wood working either the hammer or saw would be the anchor tool.
