I Just Purchased 10E Number 143

Serial Number 1143 from the original 250 built in 1947 for Wards. This machine was sold through Schusters Department Store in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1948 to a man named Spalda.

Mr. Spalda did not order a motor with his SS 10E because he was a draftsman for A. O. Smith Electrical Manufacturing and special ordered a motor from his employer that is still fully operational 75 years later.

I am so excited to be a part of the story of this machine and i am making this thread to post updates on my restoration journey to bring it back to life helping me restore a Victorian home from 1887 that i live in with my family.

For now, here is where i started 2 weeks ago-

And here is where i am today, stripped and ready for fresh paint

I am happy to be a part of this community, and hopefully i can find answers to some of my questions along the way and pass on what i learn to others.

Congratulations on a great find - and best of luck on your restoration. From the paint color you show in your "before" pic, it's seen some things on it's 75-year journey...

I just got a very nice old 10-E back together - S/N (E)5052 - not quite as old as yours, but with plenty of that early Shopsmith character (original paint, too!).

Are you going to build the wood bench or are you going with the metal legs?

The original blue prints were still tucked into the manual. So I followed them, with some minor upgrades like 2X6 legs.

Wow John, that is a beauty!

So this thing wasn't green? šŸ˜®

That explains the grey "primer" i kept grinding off under the green.
As i start watching some of the old SS videos, they talked about how the 10E only had 1 bearing on the main shaft, i got confused because mine has 2. That made me think that someone has upgraded it over the years. Wonder what else has been done?

For the paint i was going original, but decided that if i am giving it a new life, it's going to get updated colors. I have some on order that i think will really make it pop.

Iā€™m following - definitely want to see the end result!

Nice find and a great project.

I don't post a great deal at this time and I don't login unless I have something to post, but I do view what's going on.

Your 10E is early for certain at 1143. I have 1414.

I would love to get a good photo of the front Badge with the serial number at the bottom.

I have been tracking changes to the badges through the releases and trying to document the changes to the text on the badges, the size of the space they left for stamping serial numbers, the movement of the serial number toward the middle of the badge from just above the lower drive screw where it began.

There are a number of production changes and user upgrades through the years that are documented in the Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More post in Maintenance and Repair. It can be an interesting read and may help you discover more about the unit. Too many documents to actually mention. I hope you find them useful.

I know for a fact you will find the members here helpful. We are always looking to expand our knowledge and the library of documents that exist, some of which I have restored. All are donated to the worldwide Shopsmith community, and free to download. Most are graphically enhanced and are able to zoom much larger than the original document, with clarity.

Best of luck. Keep lots of photos, because this group loves photos!
