Hi Russ, question for you or anyone else that may know -

I had to go in and tighten the lock screw on the rear bearing ring that i missed during assembly. Now that i am putting things back together i noticed there is about 3/8" of play in the arbor shaft where it slides forward and back before the 2 bearings engage with thier respective grooves in the larger pipe.

This shows how far out of the sleeve it can slide

And this is with it slide in all the way

Should there be that much play in the arbor?

I made sure the bearings are seated correctly on both ends of the arbor shaft.
The bearings are new, and they do have a small ridge on the ring that goes around the shaft. This ridge protrudes a small amount from the rest of the bearing, but not enough to account for this much play.

Thanks for any help!

Question about the jitters

Overall the machine is running very smooth, but i have noticed a fair amount of vibration when doing fine work on the lathe.

To be clear i am not turning anything tiny like pens, but i have been making Harry Potter wands out of air dried cherry, which is a lot of fun

I have checked all mounts and motor alignment, I am going to add a new belt, what else can I do to smooth out SS operation for fine work at medium speed and above?

Looking at your previous post about the front Quill Bearing sliding in and out it appears you are not getting a tight fit. Was the rear Bearing seated properly? Even if it is this is not a problem since the Gauge Collar can hold the front bearing in place. The later type of Guage Collar is shown below for reference. The original Gauge Collar will not hold the front bearing in place.

.
Vibrations can be caused by a number of things. Something could be out of balance enough to be noticeable when all the parts are rotating. If using an old belt, it could be stiff and holding a "memory" from sitting tight on the pulleys for a long time.

Both bearings are seated correctly, i think the problem was that the guage collar was not seated all the way down, allowing that play to remain after assebly. I got it all the way in and the play was completely taken care of.

Not sure if i have the newer one or not, but it seems to hold the front bearing in along with a lock ring.

I also replaced the belt with a spare i had and most of the vibration went away for the low and medium speed settings. High speed still sounds like a jelopy going down a hill too fast, but i think it might be a piece from the outside of the lower belt wheel that is broken off. This has left that high gear a little ruff so I will replace it.

I am also wonderimg if the motor is due for new bushings.

Anyhow thanks again, getting some beautiful smooth spindles now without sanding.

Having a chunk missing from a pulley could be a vibration problem especially when using the slot with the chunk missing. As for the motor bearings the shaft should turn freely and smoothly by hand without a belt attached. If not, the bearings probably need to be replaced. Although not as common there are motors that need to have the bearings oiled. This is probably not the case for you. Most are sealed bearings but one motor I have from a Mark 2 needs to have a few drops of oil added periodically to each bearing under the spring-loaded dust caps. The most common motor I have had with the Model 10's I have owned is the A. O. Smith 1/2 HP motor with sealed bearings. The second most common is the A. O. Smith 3/4 HP motor with sealed bearings.

Below is a picture of the Gauge Collar versions. Left to right is the original clamp-on style, the very short time cast iron style and the more common cast aluminum style. The clamp-on collar came on the 4 Model 10E's I have owned S/N's 1033, 1076, 1077 & 4708. The cast iron collar in the center came on Model 10E S/N 8865. Model 10E S/N 13153 and all later Model 10's have had the cast aluminum Gauge Collar. That is as close as I can document for the changes between the collar versions and is the 6 lowest serial numbers I have owned or own.

Some progress this week:
Added a flip cover to the "on" portion of the on/off switch for safety and gave it a matching wood cover.

Also installed the tachometer in the headstock, and made a box for the led display. The sensor is having some issues but I think a new magnet will do the trick. I will post the install details after i worknout the bugs..

Question: is there an attachment or simple way to attach the Jacobs chuck or other attachments to the tailstock?

I am turning cups and bowls and would like to drill into the spinning wood with a forstner bit fastened in the stationary Jacobs chuck.

Yes, the SS tail stock chuck adapter.
