New Shopsmither with a recently purchased Goldie with jointer, belt sander and jigsaw. Since it was fairly nice out today, I dragged the thing out to get aquainted. First stop, the jointer. I used a square to square up the fence. When locked in position, there is quite a bit of play in the fence. It maintains it's vertical position when locked down, but rocks back and forth on the bar the fence tracks on. Is this correct? I almost think that when you lock the vertical position, it should lock it's position on the bar as well. Any ideas? Thanks.....BB

If I read your question correctly, it sounds as if you have a problem with your "Quadrant" . I'm sorry but can't seem to find a photo of that part. It is the silver colored metal part that attaches the fence to the bar. It has been noted quite a few times that the quadrant becomes stretched from over tightening. I have attempted to straighten mine in a heavy metal vise to not mush improvement. I bought a new one.

P.S. After reading Dave's post - maybe the quadrant is sliding rather than rocking?

The jointer locks both the tilt and fence position with the same handle. If you push the handle in, you will lock and unlock the tilt mechanism. If you pull the handle out, you will lock and unlock the fence position so you can slide it back and forth.

Your problem sounds like the sliding mechanism may not be locked.

Went out and checked it. I wasn't aware of the of the 2 different nuts on the quadrant. I backed it out, gave it a turn and it locked it down. Thanks for the replies.....BB

I too have a question about the jointer fence. When it is all locked down the end of my fence does not rest on the jointer table. It is raised about 1/8 of an inch off the table. I can put a little pressure on it and it will touch the table and when it is not tightened down it rests on the table. Is this normal or do I have an alignment problem?
