Model 500 Shaft Extension

On an earlier thread a discussion came up about the need for a shaft extension to operate SPT's when a second carriage was added on the left side of the model 500 headstock. (https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=2891)

I just finished making a simple adaptor that works well on both upper and lower shafts and solves any issues with driving SPT's with the extra carriage in place. I thought I would share some pictures showing how this was made. The overall length is @ 3". The whole thing cost @ $18.00. I haven't tried with all of my SPT's yet but I think this should work with any of them. Maybe someone already makes an adaptor like this, but I couldn't find one. Anyway, problem solved. I am impressed. I just may have to mount my extra carriage and play with this configuration some. I kinda gave up on the extra carriage because there was so little I could do with it in place. This reopens a lot of virgin territory.

With that hard shaft, the length of the extension might be almost unlimited allowing the extra main table back in. Just thinking out loud.

Well you certainly simplified the 'solution' by extending the driving shaft rather than what I am doing by adapting and extending on the 'driven end.

You only need one size 'sleeve'(5/8"). I am making a sleeve like the router adapter with 5/8" bore in one end and 1/2" bore in the opposite end. I am using two peices of shaft (a 5/8" and a 1/2"). This also requires both a 5/8" and a 1/2" driven hub.

I like your solution better since it requires fewer 'pieces', and only adds the two new parts(sleeve/shaft) and the proper spt hub STAYS on the spt regardless of where it is mounted. This assumes one ALREADY has the driver hub.

BTW does the BS have the off set mounting tubes or are they the std eccentric tubes? If std, then my adapter would need to be longer! They look like the std tubes.

P,S. I just noticed you have the cast iron bs - no funky tubes needed!

Nifty solution John!!! Got me to wondering if the SS 1/2" router chuck could be used along with a shaft/insert that is 1/2" on one side and 5/8" on the other?

Chuck,
Just reverse the ½" router chuck and use a ½" shaft with the ½" jointer hub and you have a workable setup. Router chuck on bandsaw, ½" shaft, jointer hub to SS power coupler.

I DOUBT it!:D After reviewing it myself it appears I have been repeating MYSELF in this post!;)

I am making mine LONGER since I also have the OFFSET(1 1/4") bandsaw mounting tubes to contend with!

Another method for an extension is to mount the 5/8" dado arbor to the output shaft and then attach a drive hub.

When using a rigid coupler like those being discussed here, does alignment of the shafts become more critical?
