The planer/jointer sharpening jig is intended to be used with the conical disc sander. It sorta can be used with a flat sanding disc.

I asked the question prematurely.

The Conical Sanding Disk would be needed if you decide to get the Planer/Jointer Knife Sharpening system. It also does other sanding jobs better than a flat Sanding Disk.
