That must be it! Looking back at my thread on the install I didn't know what the washers were for. reible explained it a couple of posts later.

From my 9/30/22 post: Thanks to your help and the video, I was able to install the new headstock lock on my Mark V. Unfortunately, when I had the switch and the belt in place, I had problems getting the bottom cover installed (should've been easy but the clips holding the bolts in place fell off). In the process of trying to retrieve the clips I managed to pull the four wires off the switch and now don't know which one goes where. Can anyone help?

Not off the top of my head, and it may vary depending on which motor you have. All I can tell you is double-check and make sure you hook them up right - I smoked a motor hooking them up wrong. Fortunately it was a good excuse to upgrade my old greenie's 3/4 hp to a 1 1/8.

Power cord connects to lower terminals, motor to upper. Black wires go to one side, white to the other. Actually on my greenie the motor wires weren't black and white so I hooked the darker one to black, lighter to white.

Does your power cord have a ground? If not, you should consider replacing the cord. I used a 14-ga cord to replace mine.

Thanks for quick reply. My wires are black/white from power and yellow/green to motor. Green on the side with white, or... Will it matter if I'm on right or left side with the neutral?

Have a photo but couldn't see how to attach - guess it should make sense as described though.

Mine was yellow and green as well. I put yellow to white and green to black -i.e. light to light and dark to dark. It doesn't matter which side of the switch is used for which pair.

Found a pic of mine from when I was installing the new power cord. Not a perfect pic but you can see what's going on

benmen/HopfefulSSer,
You guys are great. MY SS is now copasetic (after managing to get the belt completely bound on the pulley and flipping my breaker several times before finally figuring it out). Unit needed a good cleaning and waxing anyway. Thanks again.
