Hi all,
Spent a good part of the day working on 2 oak hutches that are coming out real nice. My "Goldie" does not have any saw guards on it. The more I worked on it the more it consumed my mind how dangerous this thing is without guards. I looked up guards and there are a few different styles. Can someone tell me which guard I need?

Goldie Guards

Hey BB - There are two different saw guards that came with the "Goldie" 500's, both metal. The first generation guard I believe came only with the Goldie's made in 1960. It has a dust port that is rectangular in shape and a riving knife/upper guard to match it. The first generation guard will not allow you to use 10" blades, only 9" or smaller. The second generation has the single 2.5" round dust port and also a riving knife/upper guard to match. The upper guards are not interchangable between the two. I have both of the metal guards and ironically I just bought a plastic 500 guard upgrade on ebay. Since my Goldie is a 1960 I am going to keep the 1st. gen. model, but would be happy to part with the 2nd. gen model. Just shoot me a PM if you want it. I am including some pictures for you to compare the two. Cheers, Alec

Can anyone tell me, is the front rail on the 500 the same rail that is used on the Shopsmith Bandsaw?

Dusty, I believe you are correct, that the aluminum bandsaw-table's fence-supporting piece is the same extrusion as the model-500-table's front rail. Not only that, but I'm guessing even the late-generation "extension-piece on sliding rods" for the Bandsaw's aluminum table uses the same aluminum extrusion again -- for a total of 3 uses I know of. Of course for the bandsaw's fence-supporting extrusion piece, there is a notch cut for the miter-slot.

YES! The 500 fences also work on the alum bandsaw table although only the front clamp(the fences are too long):) .
