Spacer Gauge to avoid

The brand name is Newmind and it costs only about $10. It isn't designed as a wood working tool but rather for sewing. I don't think it will work well for either, well at least not the one I got anyway.

You might have though that such a simple design product would provide some repeatability, sadly it doesn't.

So here is a picture of it in the closed state.

You adjust the "spacing" by expanding the tool. For my testing I used a sheet of paper with the ends at each end of the 11" sheet then marked the results. Closed it then reopened it and marked again. I did not expect exact spacing but figured it would be close. So from left to right, in case it hard to read in the image, 1/2", 13/16", 15/16", 1", 13/16", 9/16". No results to be trusted here.

I wonder if the Woodpeckers version worked better?

I’d bet that it did. And also that it was a lot more expensive. I don’t mind doing the math, though, especially with a spreadsheet to do the grunt work. So my wallet didn’t have a lot to fear from this particular temptaton.
