Thank you guys for the advice and tips. My shopsmith comes in tomorrow morning. Feels like Christmas Eve around here.

The tendency is to plug her in and start making sawdust. This is not a good idea unless you know something about the machine's past.
Slow, deliberate and cautious. Make sure everything is clean and lubricated. Turn the drive by hand (use a sanding disk) and turn the speed control to slow during that process. No strange noises and smooth and easy to turn.
