What a GREAT looking piece of furniture. How many hours do you have tied up in it?
Projects like this make this forum interesting, I always like to see what others are doing in their shops

Beautiful work! Just goes to show that "Shopsmither's" are just as talented and capable as anyone in woodworking.

Thanks guys, for your comments.
The Black Walnut came from my BIL's back yard as a result of a tornado that went through Neoga, IL in '02. He had it slabbed, We picked it up in '03 and it lay in our storage building until last Oct. That's when I began cutting the parts. We put the last finish on it yesterday (3/13/09). I have no idea the number of hours it took from initial rough cutting, jointing and planing till finish. I probably worked on it 20 hrs a week for 16 weeks. I do know that there are over 360 separate pieces of wood in that thing and it weighs a TON!
BTW, the cove molding was cut with Nick's guidance.

That looks very nice, Gene. I noticed that you included the LOYL in "the credits". I think that is great: The family that plays together stays together! I was wondering if you planned on making any matching pieces. A bedroom set like that will surely be heirloom material, and something that will always keep you and the LOYL in your son's memory.

Tim, the only way we could do that would be if another storm hit the BIL's place:eek: We used all the walnut we had.....and I mean ALL.
I do plan on picking some more up from a sawyer just north of the BIL's place but, that'll be in a few years.
Now that's an inspiration

ATTA BOY, GENE!!!:D Thank you for posting pictures of your Son's new Walnut Highboy!! It is a BEAUTIFUL PIECE!! Everything about it is beautiful! - from the side panels to the inset drawers to the matching knobs. Also the outstanding top molding that you made on the table saw, deserves special note. Store bought walnut molding would not have done the same job here!
I can remember when you discussed the issue you had with hot melt glue, and getting pipes long enough to clamp. No one, (almost no one) can keep track of the number of hours spent in building a super nice piece such as your highboy. After all-- you know it doesn't matter a bit! I love and follow your way of working on large pieces - just treating them as a bunch of small projects. To me it's the only way! Just term your project by months, rather than hours.
Don't know about you, but if I even anticipate the finish date of a project this can lead to rushing the final steps. That's not a good thing.
Back in mid January you mentioned the case alone had nearly 50 separate pieces. Back then you had one of the paneled sides glued up. To me, your project moved right along at a good pace.
Your wife (LOYL) also deserves an ATTA GIRL!!! for her help.
Another really nice thing is this beautiful wood came from one of your family trees!
