510 to 520

Post by TomFitz »

So I bought a used 510 table set up and want to covert it to a 520. I see there is a pre 86 and a post 86 520 kit. I don’t have any idea the age of the 520 stuff. Is there a visual way to tell which kit I would need?
Thanks

I had to ask the exact same question a few years ago.

The pictures below show the difference. The top picture is the early (1985) fence rails with the mounting holes through the rail. The bottom picture is the later (1986 and on) fence rail without mounting holes that have the threaded mounting studs attached to the tube.

The difference between the tables themselves is having threaded holes (early) for attaching the fence rails or non-threaded holes (later) for attaching the fence rails. Keep in mind that all 510/505 Tables have threaded holes for the connector tube thumb screw locks. Year doesn't matter as much as which fence rail it has due to possible upgrades. Any Mark V made prior to 1985 with the Model 510/505 Table System was upgraded.

Just an FYI, after several years of producing these tables painted gray Shopsmith changed to black paint for the Tables. I believe around the time the Mark V 520 was introduced.
