Universal tool rest question

Just received the UTR - very nice piece of kit. One question, can I leave it on all the time or do I need to remove it for various table operations?

Thanks,
Markap

I don't know. I don't have one. But looking at the catalog photo I see no reason why you can't leave it on all the time. When you do try do something that it is in the way of you'll know that you have to take it off.

It sort of looks like it would be just like having a second carriage. It works great until it is in the way.

I leave my UTR on all-of-the-time, except when I have the position set so far back (deep toward the back side of the machine) that I cannot get the saw table assembly into the carriage .. I like to be able to get the tool rest right-up to the work and in the default "centered" position, this is not nearly as easy. So I position the mounting plate further 'back' to gain the extra depth.

It depends on what you need to use your SS for. If I am using any SPT on the auxiliary side, such as bandsaw or jointer or beltsander then I leave it on. When using the saw table, it restricts one from lowering the table in order to do something like horizontal boring or sawing certain depths, so I generally remove it when doing operations on that side of the headstock.
