515704 Router Table Guard parts

I purchased a 515704 Router Table Guard from a seller on eBay. SS catalog link below.

https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cat ... sories.htm (Item A)

It arrived with the mount of the broom part damaged. (the part with the bristles) I tried to get the SS customer service lady to tell me if they sell parts for it. She wasn't sure but could not find a parts diagram for it.

Another item missing with the same item is the part referred to as the "base clamp" in this link https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/manuals/845650.pdf (page B-7, Figure D-59).

She did not know if this part was available. It is not offered for sale separately, nor does it show to be part of the guard package.

I know I can fabricate a mount, and possibly find another seller to purchase the broom part, but it sure would be nice if the SS folks understood what I was lookin for. Don't get me wrong, I am thankful to have what we have. I guess the ultimate solution is to expand the demand for this great product by defending the quality every chance we can.

I am on a Facebook small shop woodworkers group, and occasionally the SS will come up. It gets hammered usually as being low quality and with a poor table saw. I will start defending it better if I see these posts again.

I would suggest that you not spend a lot of time defending the Shopsmith when on these other forums. They already know that they are right and you are wrong. Safe your time and your breathe. Use it more productively to "make saw dust safely" using your Shopsmith.

I used to get irrated by criticism from these folks (most of whom have never used a Shopsmith). The negative comments about the small table on the Shopsmith really tells it all.

Jerry,

As Dusty said don't waste your time defending the Shopsmith Tools on other sites. Shopsmith's are either loved for what they can do or hated. You can talk yourself "blue-in-the-face" but you are not likely to change their minds. Enough said about that.

As for the parts you are looking for, having instructions for any Shopsmith items that include the parts diagram and list are invaluable for finding the parts needed. The Router Table Guard you reference P/N 515704 is different than the one in the manual you reference. I have the Router Table Guard P/N 515990 from the Speed Increaser which has the clamp you refer to for attaching it directly to the table. It is those additional parts of the Clamp that is the difference between the two guards.

The Brush Assembly P/N 514564 does not show available in a search for Shopsmith parts. The Brush Assembly is held on the clear Shield by carriage bolts, washers and wing nuts. If that is the part you need, asking for it by the part number from customer service may help. As a last resort the Shaper/Router Shield P/N 555373 uses the same Brush assembly part and currently sells for $29.87 and would give you that shield type which clamps onto the Quill to use also.

The clamp is several parts listed as follows. (the Clamp Extension, Clamp and Knob are available)

515891 Clamp Extension
515893 Clamp
515981 Knob
120382 Lock Washer (common hardware)
180120 Cap Screw (common hardware)

The size of the Lock Washer is for the bolt and the Cap Screw (Hex Head Bolt) is 3/8" - 16 x 3/4" long. You should find these cheaper locally.

A picture of the 515990 Guard and Support Assembly is shown below.

FWIW, the post will also fit in a T-nut and lock to a T-slot with a washer or two. I would guess there were more applications for this guard at the time when Shopsmith was doing a lot with router tables/systems. I would be interested in knowing exactly what under-table router/shaper guard comes with a new M7. It looks a bit like this one but I couldn't see the end of the rod well in the picture. The M7 Summary Manual mentions it mounting with a T-nut, but how/why it would be different than the one for DT is beyond me.

Comment/Question for the OP: This guard seems to be intended for under-table operations. Is that how you intend to use it? There is a simple similar version available that mounts to the quill for over-table operations: https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cat ... shield.htm Also available as part of several packages.

David,

If you check the standard accessories for the Mark 7 at the link below you will see that it comes with the Quill Mount Shaper/Router Shield and the Router Table Guard without the clamp parts the Speed Increaser one includes. Having the clamp parts makes it more versatile (no "T" track required for use) and those can be easily removed to use the guard on a "T" track. Just unscrew the post from the clamp extension and screw into the "T" nut & washer that comes with the Mark 7 Router Table Guard.

https://www.shopsmith.com/markvsite/standardaccess.htm

The Shaper/Router Shield you provided the link to is the Quill Mount one I mentioned as a source for the broken brush part and as an additional guard for over table use.

Maybe I'm not visualizing it correctly, I've never set this up. I was thinking there'd be interference between the fence (optional SS shaper fence) and using the T-Track in the table to mount this thing to the point that it would be incompatible. And that the brush part would be at a weird angle to the fence and work. So yes, much more useful with the clamps, etc. But the Mark 7 still comes with the T-Track version, which seems a bit 'kludgy' to me. (It's the one I have also.)

I'll have to try setting it up with the "T" track. That is something I haven't done before since I have the clamp version from the Speed Increaser which I had for my 520 before I upgraded to the Power Pro Headstock and other Mark 7 upgrades. My guess is the clamp version of the guard comes with the Speed Increaser because it can work with any Mark V model.

Looking at the copy of the Mark 7 Manual I have dated 09/10 it goes back and forth between using the "T" track and clamp Guards.

This is exactly why I got frustrated with Shopsmith's customer service. Without these part numbers I can't find them on the web site. My level of confidence with their answer decreases without them saying "I see the part on the diagram, but we not longer provide that part as a stand alone product to sell." At least this is better than saying, " I can't find the product you have, so we must not manufacture it any more."

Thank you Russ for providing the information. Why doesn't Shopsmith have instruction sheets / diagrams for downloading on every product they sell? I see a download for a bandsaw, but not the jointer. Why I ask can't I download the PDF file for anything they sell. If I buy it used, that means that they already earned the revenue from the sale. If I buy it new, provide the owners manual. They should just provide the link when a purchase is made for a new SPT, etc. They shouldn't be in the printing business. It would also earn them some goodwill.

For the current and recent Mark series tools and SPT's they have the online Service Parts section with diagrams and parts lists for them.

I agree it would be less costly and more efficient for Shopsmith to make available the instruction sheets with the parts list as PDF's instead of selling them which creates the work of having to print them, store them, retrieve them, package them and ship them then having them available to download here on the website. These shorter instruction sheets of 1 to 4 or so pages are not worth the company's expense of selling them separately. If you know the item number you can order most of these just like the complete manuals for the Mark series tools (even old discontinued tools) and SPT's. Some are available as PDF's while others are not. I don't know why the current Bandsaw Owner's Guide and Parts Diagram/List are available as a PDF but other SPT's are not. The Guard information for the Speed Increaser Guard is part of the Speed Increaser's Instruction Manual which is 28 pages.

What I do find sad is some unknowing owners buy PDF copies of manuals on ebay which can be found for free elsewhere. One person even sells, for profit, PDF copies of Everett Davis' restored manuals he has made available for free to the Shopsmith community. For those see the topic Shopsmith Large Format Drawings Illustrations and more here in the Maintenance and Repair section and use the link to his google drive.
