New to me belt sander and stand
Picked this up on FB Marketplace today for $100. The belt sander Id tag is gone but it has smaller dust collection port so no idea of its age but older. The drive roller doesn’t have a rubber sleeve. Did they make any that did not have rubber sleeves? I need to work on the tensioner and get a 5 or 6” pulley to get the speed slower.
The stand seems to have the identical finish as the SPT base but I can’t find anything like it on the SS website, nothing I find has that type of motor mount. The motor is a 1 hp craftsman 3450 rpm for a table saw. My oldest catalog is 2001 and doesn’t have anything like it. Any ideas who made it?

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
It doesn't appear to be a SS stand. I have one of the SS stands from the 90's before they were discontinued. First thing I notice is the SS stands didn't have a shelf. The motor was mounted upside down under the top. Second, the legs are not drilled for castors and third the SS stands had a motor switch integrated on one of the legs.
Interesting that the top has the hole in it like the SS stands.

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
I’m suspecting something Craftsman but haven’t found anything with the wings like those the motor is mounted to. They are separate pieces and seem allow the motor to sag to provide belt tension. The opening in the top is not just a rectangle but has two witdhs, hard to see with the SPT base in the way. Texture and color seem identical to the SPT mount.
I did find the rubber sleeve by itself for the drive roller at the mothership and I found instructions to re-tension the idler drum. I’m hoping the idler has the crown too, will check next time I’m in the shop.

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
The Belt Sander having the Magna logo still with the Shopsmith Inc. sticker and from Tipp City it is probably one made in the 1970's.
Although I haven't owned one, I have seen that style of stand before so it could be a Shopsmith one missing the power switch box.

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
I think I may have found it in some old catalogs.
June 1978 catalog Spring/Summer 1983 catalog Apparently changed in the Fall/Winter 1983 catalog

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
You will want to get a 1725 rpm motor for the belt sander. I have my SS band saw on a SS Power Station. SS 6" joiner, 6" belt sander are on stand alone wood stands. SS scroll saw in on a bench with a Oscillating drum sander and a Sears 10" band saw. Used an old electric trolling motor foot switch on the scroll saw so both hand can stay on the work piece and the saw turned on and off. I need to find a 1/3 hp double shaft motor to power a 8" disc sanded and 1" band sander. Kind of hard to come by.

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
As long as you use the correct pulley sizes the 3450 RPM motor you have will be fine. For wood sanding and metal sharpening the recommended speed ranges from 1150 to 1900 RPM as per the Shopsmith chart. Slower for plastic.

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
There is a 2.5" pulley on the craftsman 1hp motor. If I did the online calculator right a 6" will give me 1437rpm and a 7" will do 1232rpm, low to midrange for sanding. I seldom mess with plastics. Is the 3450rpm fast enough for the planer? I might be better off to set up the planer on the stand and use the sander on the Shopsmith.

Re: New to me belt sander and stand
That sounds like a good idea. You can mount the sander on either the right or the left side of the Shopsmith and leave it there. When you mount the planer on the Shopsmith you limit what else you can use it for, and you have to feed the stock from the back side of the machine unless you have a reversible motor. And it's heavy, your back will hurt less if it's on it's own stand.larryhrockisland wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 1:13 pm I might be better off to set up the planer on the stand and use the sander on the Shopsmith.

Well, I'm embarrassed I meant to say jointer, and it is heavy enough on its own.
