Hey all,
I just purchased and received a new 5/8” sawblade arbor off Ebay and when I put a blade in and mounted it on my SS, it immediately started rubbing the saw guard. So I measured it against my old 1&1/4” SS arbor and there’s a 1/8” length difference, the SS arbor being 1&5/8” from the blade to the end, and the new arbor 1&1/2”. I purchased it from the Bandsaw Tire Warehouse. I’ve put in a request for clarification from them but wanted to check with you folks to see if anyone else experienced this and if you have any ideas for fixing it.
It’s hard to get a really accurate picture of the length but you should be able to see that there is a difference in length.

Are you aware that the 500 uses different arbors than the 505/510/520? Make sure you have the correct one for your model. Shopsmith has the correct ones. Consider getting one from them.

Never mind. I didn’t know or had forgotten that Shopsmith had, along with all the other changes 500 to 510, they added a slightly longer quill length, and had ordered the wrong arbor size. Problem solved.

The differences in Arbors has been discussed many times before but may still be worth repeating here in case someone else is looking for Arbor information and sees this thread first. There is a difference in the Arbor lengths for the Mark 5/V 500 with the original Table System versus the Mark V 510/505, 520, Mark 7 and Mark 4. These later Mark tools all use a Saw Guard set that require longer arbors than was needed for the Mark 5/V 500. I do not know the source of the Arbors Bandsaw Tire Warehouse sells but the one shown above does look like the OEM Shopsmith 5/8" Arbor for the Mark 5/V 500. Something to keep in mind for owners of the Mark 5/V 500 is there are several different Saw Guard sets that were made over the years for this model's Table System and the longer Arbors may not fit in the Lower Saw Guard you may have so it is best to use the Arbors made for your Table System.

Another thing to know about Arbors is the 12" Steel Sanding Disk has two hub lengths too. The early shorter one was made for the Mark 5/V 500 and the longer one is for the Mark V 510/505, 520, Mark 7 and Mark 4 as the lower Saw Guard can be used for dust collection. None of the Saw Guard sets for the Mark 5/V 500 can be used for dust collection as they are too small to accommodate the 12" Sanding Disk. The Mark 5/V 500 can use either hub length Disk Sander and a stripped-down version of the Mark V 510/505, 520, Mark 7 and Mark 4 lower Saw Guard is available for Mark 5/V 500 owners to have dust collection available.
