The use of the lathe (turning) is new to me. I would like a recommendation for a good video (DVD) which teaches the basic of wood turning. I may have overlooked it but did not see any available from Shop Smith.

There are many different items which you can turn. I have some DVD's I had purchased but found nothing better for myself than actual hands-on learning. I am fortunate to have a Woodcraft Store about an hours drive from where I live and they offer many types of turning classes from basic how to turn spindles and bowls to more advanced like hollowed ornaments, lidded boxes, etc. Not sure where you live or if you have any Woodcraft Stores nearby but that is a suggestion from me. Also check online to see if there are any wood turning clubs near you. If you plan on getting into pen turning, Penn State Industries has a free DVD you can send for and if you get hooked into pen turning(Be careful as it is addictive) they also have a great starter kit for the Shopsmith. There are several beginners woodturning DVD's out there for sale. Unfortunately, no one has produced one that includes using the Shopsmith as a lathe. Maybe someday I'll get around to it as I have the equipment and the experience, though I do not know how much of a demand for a woodturning DVD featuring a Shopsmith is out there.

They offer a lot of different turning DVD's for sale, from beginner to advanced. I recommend Richard Raffan, Mike Mahoney and Jimmy Clewes. I have these DVD's and they are great for getting started right, and are easy to follow. I have also taken personal turning classes from all three of them. They are great people to know and learn the art of turning wood from.

Also a fun note: Did you know that several of todays well-known woodturners got there start on a Shopsmith? It's true. Most got started turning by using there fathers or grandfathers Shopsmith. So you are in good company.
