I purchased a Shopsmith with a lot of accessories and the item in the photo I can't identify. Does anyone know how to use this part? There are not any numbers on it.
Thanks,
Doug

I don't recognize it right off. On the end shown, is the hole 5/8" ID? What does the other end look like? What version or model of Shopsmith do you have?

Is that piece from a mortising tool?

Exactly correct ED. This is one of the accessories I have not used yet. Thanks for the info.

Just for reference the picture below shows complete Mortises and the Hold-downs starting with the one for the Model 10's (left), Mark 5 Greenies (center) and the current set (right). Other than color for the Greenie and the Goldie (not shown) there is very little difference between them. The Cap and Set Screws changed from using a 3/16" Allen Wrench to the 5/32" Allen Wrench with the introduction of the Mark 5 in 1954. The black protective coating, as seen on Doug's Sleeve above, was added beginning in 1964. The casting for the Hold-down changed on the newer ones along with the addition of the "T" slot nut for Mark models other than the original Mark 5/V 500 Table/Fence system, Mark 2 and 1960's Mark VII. Any of the different era Mortises will work on any Shopsmith. The Hold-down which attaches to the Fence on all models needs the "T" nut for use on the Mark V 510/505, 520, Mark 7, Mark 4 and the upgrade Mark V 500 Fence with the "T" slot.

.
For reference a PDF copy instruction sheet from the Model 10 era is below. Setup and use will be similar on Mark models.
