10ER Motor

Post by Real1shepperd »

I've got a 10ER....probably the original AO Smith motor. I've replaced the old cord with a new cord and about 95% of the time it works just fine. On the other 5%, I flip the switch and you see the blade 'bump' just a tiny fraction, but nothing else happens. Try the switch again and it takes off as usual. Wondering what's going on here? I haven't had one of these motors apart yet and was wondering if there's a start-up capacitor and/or if is this a harbinger of something bad happening in the future.

Below is a picture of the A. O. Smith 1/2 HP Motor commonly supplied with the Model 10ER when the purchaser opted for the motor included.

I have restored more than 20 Model 10's with the A. O. Smith 1/2 HP Motor and none had more than a need for some cleaning dust out, checking the contacts on the internal start switch (which I suspect may be your problem) and/or replacing the bearings. Due to their age all have had the original power cord and switch replaced. The picture below shows the internal start switch contacts. Sorry, this is not the best picture to see it but to get a better one I would have to go out to the shop and open up a motor.

You can see where the contacts are with the motor opened up. Check for dust, debris in the motor and clean contacts. Since it runs okay most of the time dust/debris getting in the contacts may be the problem.

Thanks....when I get some time, I'll break down the motor and clean it all up again.
