looking for help pricing a Mark VII to sell

Post by azcoot87 »

I have a Shopsmith Mark VII that we inherited from my mom's husband. We're trying to clear out my mom's garage within a couple of weeks so we can list the house and looking to sell the Mark VII. Can anyone tell from the pictures what might be a fair asking price or a good place to start? The serial number is 407433. We have the "Shaper Fence" in the original case with paperwork. We also have the Shopsmith Mark VII owner's manual Copyright 1963, Shopsmith Mark VII parts manual Copyright 1965 and Magna American Corporation Accessories prices effective July 1, 1965. We couldn't find the key and was lucky enough to obtain one on here. It runs in forward well, but only hums when we switch to reverse. I was told that it's a switch that needs tweaking. It was mentioned about missing a drill chuck, we have since come across a bunch of Jacobs chucks and keys. I do have 2 people who have inquired, just not sure what to price it at.

Thanks,
Mike

For starters it is missing some stuff.

It is a "project" machine.

Needs to go to someone willing to make it fully functional.

If you have 'inquiries' feel them out re what THEY are willing to pay.

Your first priority is to get it out of the garage.

Second priority is to get it to a good home.

Third priority is the $ factor.

I figured it's missing some things. Anything specific you can point out? Hoping we can find a few of the missing items this weekend. Going to see if we can tweak the switch as you mentioned.

The one person who inquired wants me to come up with a price. I asked him what he would offer, but no go. Apparently he has another "project". He mentioned, "I have one as well and trying to rebuild it if you could try and get a pic of the serial number....thank God you have the key mine needs one and know what to go through..lol..." When I asked what he was thinking on price, he answered with "Don't want to low ball ya". So, I told him I'd do some thinking and reach out to some people who know way more than I do....aka this forum!

Yes, I want to get it out of the garage, but I really do want it to go to someone who will appreciate it, fix it up and use it. Wish there was someone in this forum in the area (Iowa) looking for one. Thanks for your opinion!

What is the "grip" you're referring to?

Sorry, too far for me. I want a Mark VII, but you're around 1200 miles away.

Looks like the plastic speed adj cam is good. That's a plus. I don't see the rip fence. That would be a minus because only a mark VII fence fits on a Mark VII. Make sure you look for that. I would collect any parts that look like it should be with the Shopsmith. Take it out and clean it up a bit.
It's hard on the motor to start at or near hi speed so put a glove on and turn the blade by hand (with elec cord unplugged) and turn the speed dial down at the same time to slow or near slow. Lube up the sheaves a bit.

I have a Mark VII also and I would say yours cleaned up a bit and with the important parts (look for that rip fence!) is worth $200-$300.

Also look at Craigslist and Facebook Market Place for Shopsmith and Shop Smith, both spellings, to see what the average price is in your area. Prices vary a lot depending on what is available and how many accessories come with the machine. Just in the Cedar Rapids area of Iowa there are a couple of 510 machines for sale with band saws, one is listed for $400 and the other for $1200. There is also a 10ER for sale listed at $650.
