vertical lock screw doesn't aline to recess in drill press mode
The screw that hold the head in the drill press position doesn't go into he recessed hole. It just touches the frame at the edge of the hole. I don't see any adjustments.

That's exactly how it is supposed to work. Don't feel bad, 90% of new Shopsmith owners think there's something wrong.

OK, thanks. It seems Odd they design it that way. It must seem odd to many others if they had to attach that special tag.

Not understanding the design intent is what causes those 90+% to think something is wrong. The offset is so that the lock screw contacts a slope that provides increasing interference IF the assembly moves towards falling back down to horizontal.

Not sure I understand that argument about interference- wouldn't a thru-hole pin do the same thing?
Re: vertical lock screw doesn't aline to recess in drill press mode
A through hole pin would work but the tolerances would have to be much tighter to prevent movement and to insure the pin would go in the hole. With this design just tightening the knob eliminates the need for precise tolerances and provides the same result..

A better result, actually, IMHO. With the offset design, there is zero slop/play — it’s locked up tight. With a through pin, you could never achieve that.jsburger wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2023 6:11 pm A through hole pin would work but the tolerances would have to be much tighter to prevent movement and to insure the pin would go in the hole. Ah I see- thanks ! It does work-I'm not advocating for a change- just curious
