Replacing dust collector bag filter with Pleated filter

Post by dwberry »

Has anyone replaced their DC3300 bag filter to a pleated filter, such as those offered by Winn Filters? If so, what model # and how was the coversion?

P.S. Just keep in mind that Wynn filters are intended to be run with a dust collector that uses a cyclone separator in front of it to prolong filter life. Reason being that the Wynn is a HEPA filter and will filter down to particle sizes of 0.5μm (think I got the right number from Wynn). In comparison the standard Shopsmith cloth filter hood only filters down to 7μm (12" filter hood). If you have the 24" filter hood it goes down to 5μm and the 42" filter hood goes down to 1μm. Since the Wynn filter is much more restrictive to smaller particle sizes (saving your lungs), sawdust will quickly cake up and fill the filter hood making it more restrictive which cuts downs on airflow. You can try to clean it, but cleaning HEPA filters can damage them, so be careful. Eventually you will need to replace the Wynn filter and they are expensive to replace, which is why I would advise a cyclone in front of it. Putting a cyclone in front of it, will also reduce the airflow because the DC-3300 isn't a very powerful dust collector. So you may want to consider a new, more powerful dust collector that has a HEPA filter and a cyclone included before attempting to upgrade the DC-3300 to a HEPA filter. JMO.
