$3 a Board Foot for Rough Cut Lumber?

Post by etc92guy »

My Shopsmith is finally operational ( with a BIG thank you to Bill Mayo ). With this happening, and the fact that I have a SPT joiner, it looks like I can move from planed boards to rough cut lumber ( and save $!!!!, yeah, right ).

I found a local ad on craigslist that advertised $3.00/bd. ft. In his e-mail he says, " Maple of the area which is hard maple, Mostly spalted maple right now that is dry, also walnut and ash, If you have a log that you can get here I will cut it any way you want it, flat sawn or quarter. I can get 29" X 11' in the saw".

Being a newbie, I have no idea if this is a "good" price or not.

Any feedback is appreciated.....

seems a bit high to me. last month i bought a 10" by 4/4 by 3' board of bloodwood at woodcraft for $12.00. it was s2s and ready to use. the spalted maple would be good for turning bowls but not for flat work. you will also need a planer to get useable lumber from rough sawn boards. a jointer is good for edges and one surface.

reminder that spalted wood is fungi filled.

you might want to check out the wiki entry on spalting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spalting

if you are using spalted wood, please pay extra attention to fine dust generation and transport into your house just as you would for toxic woods. we don't want to lose more woodworkers to lung damage.

congratulations on getting your SS operational.
many of us owe multiple debts of gratitude to Bill Mayo. definitely me included.

I'm out here where it's either mesquite or juniper for local woods. I would gladly pay your price for spalted maple.

Out here, $3/ Bd Ft would be a good price. I note that bettyt44720 paid a little over $4/ Bd Ft for his 10" wide piece of maple.

Spalted Maple wouldn't be my choice for cabinetry of furniture, But it does have favor with some turners. To me it is like using blue stained pine. Incipient decay like blue stain adds some pretty figure sometimes. I don't know much about the term spalting, but from the wikipedia source, it also, is color from the beginning (incipient) stages of a decay. Once dry, the fungi will not continue to grow.

you are correct on just over $4 bf however, it was not maple, it was bloodwood and s2s, surfaced two sides and it was ready to work not green. big difference. we are fortunate that maple is plentiful here in the midwest. in other countries our common woods are sought after or considered exoctic. while we want their common woods that are exoctic to us.

i bought some coffee mug kits from rockler and plan to laminate it on both sides with some white oak to make a blank about 3 1/2 square. saw a similar style on the pen turners forum that gave me the idea.

this is not my mug. it is from another forum but it gives the jist of what i'm looking to do.
