Serial number database of non-SPT Magna-Line tools?

Post by jpdalton »

As if my collection of Model 10s, Mark 5s, Mark 2, and Sawsmiths (yes, plural) were not enough, now I appear to be adding Magna-Line tools to the stable…

Picked up a really cool and very good condition standalone Magna 9-inch Table Saw this week, and looking forward to that restoration project this spring. I finally got a good look at the ID plate on the back, and was curious if I could get an approximate manufacturing date based on the serial number.

Anyone aware of any serial number database that exists for the non-SPT Magna-Line tools? I know there were some for all the SPTs on the old Shopsmith, Inc site, so was wondering if something similar might exist for the table saw and standalone drill press from that era.

John,

Nice addition to your collection.

I don't know of any serial number databases for the strictly Magna Line Tools other than the SPT's we commonly know which were originally called Add-a-Tool before being advertised as part of the Magna Line Tools and later as SPT's. If any exist Everett may have copies in the collection of Goldschmidt documents he has. The Magna Line Tools not part of the SPT group are as follows

Model 710 Magna 9” Tilt Arbor Bench Saw 71 000 (Floor Model - 71 008 w/ legs) (Combination - 71 009 with Magna 4” Jointer Model 620 - SPT Mount)

Model 730 Magna 12-1/2” Drill Press 73 000

Model 735 Magna 12-1/2” Jig Saw 73 500 (different from the Model 610 18" Magna/Shopsmith Jig Saw) (It does not have SPT Mounting Posts)

Model 740 Magna 30” Wood Lathe 74 000 (Floor Model - 74 008 w/ legs)

Model 745 Magna 4” Belt Sander 74 500 (It does not have SPT Mounting Posts)

Model 780 Magna 10” Contractors Saw 78 000 (came as Floor Model only w/ legs)

I don't know when each of the Magna Line Tools were introduced but yours having the Magna Power Tool Corporation name makes it an earlier one. The PDF of a brochure I have has the 9" Bench Saw listing the Yuba name copyright 1957 with the Magna/Shopsmith STP's of the era. I believe that brochure was a reprint of an earlier Magna Power Tool Corporation brochure changing the name on it. The other 5 Magna Line Tools are not included in that brochure. I have PDF copies from Everett of the 4" Belt Sander and the Drill Press both copyright 1957 but with the Magna Power Tool Corporation name.

If you don't have one check Everett's Google Drive for a PDF of the Owner's Guide for the Magna 9" Saw.

Thanks, Russ.

And from the Magna-Line catalog , let’s not forget that mighty mite, the Model 720 8-inch bench saw!

That's one I had not seen anything on before. I'm still learning new things about Magna/Shopsmith Tools. :)

The Fence looks a lot like the Mark 2's.

Thanks for mentioning this one, Russ! This was another of the “thrifty-three” - low-end, standalone power tools - targeted to that part of the market that wasn’t shelling out for a Shopsmith or standalone SPTs.

And it’s also a great example of the relationship between Magna and Montgomery Ward, with the latter rebranding the lower end Magna products under their own Powr-Kraft label. An example of one of these is on eBay today:

I have pictures of a Magna Line Model 735 12-1/2" Jigsaw. It has an interesting serial number of 75A - 7. Makes me wonder how that serial numbering system went compared to your Bench Saw's serial number fitting in a more traditional serial number sequence like the other Magna/Shopsmith Tools prior to date coding.

I don't see many of these Magna Line Tools when checking the online sale/auction sites.
